Volunteering as a Lunchtime Pianist: A True Win-Win Deal

Now you can officially call me a lunchtime pianist! 🎹✨

I’ve recently started playing the piano at a local nursing home near my place during their lunch hour. It’s a weekly volunteer commitment that has quickly become one of the highlights of my week.

Although I am just a hobby-level pianist, I am incredibly grateful to share whatever skills I have with others.

The idea first came to me while I was doing my practical work placement for my Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability).

During my time there, I had a conversation with one of the residents that helped to shift my perspective. She told me how much she used to love playing the organ when she was young. Sadly, she can no longer play because she can’t sit upright without physical support.

I also noticed how many of the elderly residents struggled with simple tasks—some couldn't open their hands or grip things because their fingers had become stiff, or in some cases, deformed by arthritis.

It hit me hard: everything we are able to enjoy right now—our health, our mobility, our talents—is temporary.

These things are given to us for just a season. It reminded me that we should truly make the most of what we have, always keeping a heart of gratitude.

That was the exact moment I realized I wanted to use my talents, however modest, in service of others.

I remember reading a beautiful quote once. I can’t recall the exact words, but it went something like this: “An apple tree doesn’t grow apples to eat them itself. A river doesn't flow to drink its own water.” Nature lives to serve others, and perhaps that is exactly how we are meant to live, too.

So, I thought, why not use my musical talents for the community? By doing this, I get a meaningful space to perform rather than just practising alone at home, and the grandmas and grandpas get to enjoy live music while having their lunch. It’s a genuine win-win deal!

Want to Volunteer at Care Facilities in Australia? Here is How!

If you are living in Australia and looking for a fulfilling way to give back, aged care facilities are always looking for passionate volunteers. You don’t need specialized healthcare qualifications to make a difference.

Here are some of the most common ways you can get involved:

  • Companionship & Social Visits: Simply sitting with residents, having a warm chat over a cup of tea, going for walks around the facility, or reading the newspaper together to help combat loneliness.

  • Leisure & Activity Support: Helping staff run lifestyle programs like Bingo, arts and crafts sessions, trivia, or board games.

  • Talent & Skill Sharing: Just like playing an instrument, you can share your unique hobbies—whether that’s teaching a basic pottery class, singing, or presenting a topic you are passionate about.

  • Outing & Transport Assistance: Accompanying residents on day trips, or volunteering as a mini-bus driver (if you hold the appropriate driver’s license) for social excursions.

  • Gardening & Maintenance: Helping residents maintain the facility's garden beds or vegetable patches so they can safely enjoy the outdoors.

⚠️ Getting Started: Because you will be working with a vulnerable population, Australian facilities require all volunteers to undergo a National Police Check. Most non-profit providers will gladly arrange and cover the cost of this check for you once you apply!

If you have a little bit of time to spare each week, I highly recommend looking into a local care home. It might just change your perspective on life, just like it did mine.
